About Scientific Publications on this Site
One hundred and sixty publications were selected for inclusion
in the project including all 120 publications of the American Museum
of Natural History based on the material collected by the 1909-1915
Congo Expedition, 12 publications of the British Museum on Congo
ants by Barry Bolton, 11 publications on African ants of the South
African Museum and affiliated organizations, and 17 publications
of the IUCN (the World Conservation Union) relating to the Congo.
Each of the publications was manually keyed and marked up using
a small subset of the TEI
lite XML DTD. The marked up texts were added to an Oracle database
using Oracle's interMedia Text module. In the first version of the
interface to the scientific publications, only the tags for heads
and page breaks are indexed separately from the full text. Users
can search either the full text or they can limit their search to
the heads (the text that was centered and boldface in the original
documents). Future plans call for developing tags specific to taxonomic
literature.
Archival images of the pages of the publications were created at
600 dpi for bitonal page images and 400 dpi grayscale for pages
containing halftones or line art. A search on the keyed and marked
text produces a page image as the result. The marked text itself
is not displayed.
The keying, markup and image scanning were done by Saztec International,
Inc.
