Chapin carried out many responsibilities during the expedition, but his great passion was birds. Lang, his boss, let him indulge that passion as much as possible. After his return from the Congo, Chapin earned a doctorate from Columbia University and then joined the American Museum's Department of Ornithology, eventually becoming its Chairman.
