Excerpts from King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild
King Leopold's Ghost describes the Congo in the period
just prior to the American Museum Expedition. In 1885, King
Leopold II of Belgium took control of the vast Congo Basin
and began a process of pacification and exploitation. By
the time Leopold ceded the Congo to Belgium in 1908, he
had amassed a huge personal fortune at the cost of millions
of Congolese lives.
