  70. Akeley, Carl Ethan. 1922. Meandering in Africa. 1 videocassette (40 min.) : si., b&w ; 3/4 in. New York: American Museum of Natural History.
Abstract: Filmed during the AMNH Akeley African Expedition to the Belgian Congo (now Zaire), 1921-1922. This film was made by Carl Akeley, museum taxidermist, inventor, naturalist, and explorer. Akeley wanted to secure gorilla specimens for the museum and undertook this expedition accompanied by several friends of his: Chicago lawyer Herbert Bradley and his wife Mary; Alice, their five-year-old daughter; Alice's nanny, Priscilla Hall; and Akeley's secretary and editor of the film, Martha Miller Blivin. Akeley shot extensive footage of Victoria Falls, which lies on the Zambia-Zimbabwe (then Northern and Southern Rhodesia) border, with a camera of his own invention, which enabled him to follow the movements of the water and the mist. The expedition party is shown on the edge of these spectacular falls. In the next sequence, Batwa people, dressed in bark-cloth skirts and beaded necklaces, and their hair shaved into designs, dance animatedly. A segment follows of the Nyamlagira volcano crater, with views of lava flowing, crackling, and seething below the rim of the crater. The steamer on which the expedition party traveled on the Lualaba River is shown, as are natives fetching water, women in calico wraps, shallow, long dugouts gliding on the river, and beehive-like dwellings on shore. A large flock of ibis perches in the trees and flies about. Close-ups of a shoebill stork follow, showing the stork eating, which seems to be an arduous task. A man wearing a pincer attached to small chains on his nose strolls in a market. The caption suggests that the pincer is a "clothespin used to keep snuff in." Men are filmed using a fire drill. The expedition party moves along with native carriers toting various bundles, including bicycles. Blivin shoots and kills an elephant, and she and Akeley examine the bullet holes. In the next section the following animals are filmed: weaver birds, kobs, waterbucks, topi, ostriches, monkeys, elephants, and baboons. Upon reaching Mount Karisimbi, the expedition party discovers gorilla nests and here, the first motion picture ever taken of wild gorillas is made. This is of more historic than scientific importance, as this footage is mostly comprised of long shots, the animals not being observed at close range. An adult male silverback gorilla retreats into the bush. Next, an adult female plays with two juveniles in a tree. A brief sequence follows in which a gorilla, killed by Akeley, is held up by the natives. Herbert Bradley shoots the 354-pound lone male of Karisimbi, and Mary Bradley and Blivin arrive to examine the "fallen giant." Akeley takes measurements of the large gorilla. The natives, in a humorous segment, mimick gorilla behavior. The film ends with panning shots of Mount Mikeno, which would eventually become the background painting for the gorilla diorama in the museum's Akeley Hall of African Mammals. It was also in this place that Akeley would die of fever, dysentery, and exhaustion in 1926.

  76. American Museum of Natural History. Congo. Warner Bros. 1 videocassette (5 min.) : sd., b&w ; 3/4 in. New York.
Abstract: This footage is comprised of outtakes of the Warner Brothers feature film The Congo but there is no information on it in the Warners' archives. The print was given to the museum by Norman Moray, of Warners, in 1947, on behalf of Harry M. Warner. The film was made in the Congo region that is now Zaire and provides a survey of landscapes (waterfalls, and the Lualaba River), as well as the wildlife (an elephant and a lion), and the people of the region (pygmies and Mubira people). The footage ends with a test to determine the guilt or innocence of an accused witch. She is forced to take poison which, it is believed, will not kill her if she is innocent. Since she dies, she is proven guilty.

Abstract: Filmed during the AMNH William D. Campbell African Expedition, 1938. The objective of the AMNH William D. Campbell African Expedition was to collect specimens for the okapi and Nile groups in the AMNH Akeley Hall of African Mammals. The expedition party traveled through Kenya, Uganda, Zaire, and the Sudan, under the leadership of William Durant Campbell, field associate of the AMNH Department of Mammalogy. The staff included Major W. V. D. Dickenson, a white hunter for MGM's movie Trader Horn who also did stunt work for that 1929 film, and Gardell D. Christensen, AMNH naturalist and taxidermist. Christensen was replaced by Robert W. Kane, AMNH artist, for the Nile leg of the expedition. The expedition begins at Campbell's ranch in Nyeri, Kenya, where supplies are loaded on the expedition vehicles. The film follows the route of the expedition over the Tana River Bridge, Kenya; over the Nzoia Bridge on the Uganda border; past the Ripon Falls in Uganda (now submerged by Owen Falls Dam); over the Jinja Bridge in Uganda, which spans the Nile; and past the Kivu Volcano (Zaire), seen in the distance. En route the staff pays homage to Carl Ethan Akeley at his grave site. Akeley was an AMNH taxidermist, inventor, explorer, and naturalist who died in the Belgian Congo (now Zaire) in 1926. This leg of the expedition was especially comfortable: the campsites were elegant and well-appointed, and were supplemented by occasional sojourns to such places as the Ibis Hotel and Mr. Putnam's Rest House, where clothing was not only washed, but ironed. The expedition reaches the Ituri Forest, Belgian Congo (now Zaire), home of the okapi, a large, shy mammal related to the giraffe. Magnificent pea trees festooned with lianas are featured. Bambuti help the hired expedition natives to clear the campsite in the forest. In a Bambuti camp, natives adorned with bits of leaves and loin-cloths of bark, some with body paint, dance around a man lying on his back with his eyes closed. The next sequence is of an okapi pen. A photographic study of a dead okapi follows; its skeleton is cleaned and its skin prepared. The second part of this expedition film covers collecting for the Nile group, and at Juba the Sudan trip personnel is introduced. As the expedition moves along, their trucks continually get stuck in riverbeds; the Dinkas are ever helpful in pulling them out. More than twenty of them remove a hippopotamus bagged by Campbell from the water and are rewarded with its meat after the necessary parts are taken by the expedition staff. The last section of this film is original kodachrome and black-and-white. Some footage is repeated in color: a close-up study of a hippopotamus, and the fording of rivers. Dinka women are seen. In both color and black-and-white, fishing techniques are shown; the Dinka stir up the river bottom, and fish are then caught in baskets and nets. Two kites are studied as they descend to catch their meal. Photographic studies are made of the following dead animals: a crocodile, an African saddlebill stork, a Nile lechwe, a sitatunga, and a roan antelope.

Abstract: This film is of the AMNH Ruwenzori-Kivu Expedition to Central Africa, Uganda, and Zaire, the purpose of which was to collect birds and small animals and record the regions visited. The expedition staff consisted of James Paul Chapin, leader and museum ornithologist, DeWitt L. Sage, photographer, and Frank Matthews, ornithologist. The Bambuti pygmies are depicted through group portraits only. Many hippopotomuses are pictured in the river and the carcass of one is seen being hauled out of the river by a group of natives. There is a dance performed by a tribe that is not identified, perhaps the Wandade: Chapin writes of an association with them. The principal content of this film is the footage taken at various campsites on the mountain. At the campsite at the base of the Ruwenzori range, at 7,000 feet, a pole and thatched house is constructed, which is named "Mud Villa." As the expedition proceeded toward the summit of Mount Ruwenzori, varying belts of vegetation were traversed: wild bananas in the mountain forest, at 7,000 feet; bamboo forests at 8,600 feet; and moss covered heath trees, surrounded by thick blankets of moss, at 12,200 feet. At 14,000 feet, continuing a tradition set by their predecessors, the staff put their names in a bottle, corked it and left it there for the next explorers. Lobelia plants are seen. Finally, the heavy mists lift and the peak of Alexandria, at 16,700 feet, is seen. This film is incomplete. The beginning is missing and there is no way to determine how much of the picture is lost.

Abstract: Filmed during the AMNH Central African Expedition, 1948. Starting at Cape Town and going round the southern tip of Africa up to Mombasa, Kenya, the AMNH Central African Expedition, led by AMNH director of preparation and installation James Lippitt Clark, then traveled through Nairobi, the Mountains of the Moon in the Ruwenzori Range in Uganda and Zaire, Ripon Falls (Uganda), Bagasson (Congo) and Stanleyville (now Kisangani in Zaire), all north of Lake Victoria, then to Uganda, the Belgian Congo (now Zaire) and Congo. The film opens with a map showing the route. Expedition activities follow, including fording rivers, setting up camp, cooking, baking bread, and ironing, all photographed at Campsite #4 in Narok, Kenya. The Masai people are shown tending their cattle, which includes milking and bleeding. The Masai dung-covered dwellings are seen, as are the moran, or warrior strata of the Masai, with their shields and swords. Pygmies cook, smoke, sing, and dance. The expedition filmed many different species of animals: mammals, including giraffes (courtship behavior), lions, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, leopards, cattle, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, warthogs, jackals, waterbucks, impalas, kobs, topis, bushbucks, Thomson's gazelles, Grant's gazelles and wildebeests; birds, including egrets, crowned cranes (courtship behavior), storks, vultures, hammerkops, hawks, bustards and pelicans; insects, including ants and various ant nests, termites, termite queens and termite nests, butterflies, and grasshoppers; reptiles, including a python, and a turtle; and invertebrates in the form of millipedes and a snail.
