  1. Adam, J. I., and O. A. Saether. 1999. Revision of the Genus Nilothauma Kieffer, 1921 (Diptera : Chironomidae). Entomologica Scandinavica : 1-107.
Abstract: A revised generic diagnosis of the genus Nilothauma Kieffer, 1921a, is given. Toyayusurika Sasa, Suzuki et Sakai, 1998, is a junior synonym of Nilothauma, and T. simantofea Sasa, Suzuki et Sakai, a junior synonym of N. hibaratertia Sasa. N. jintuprimum (Sasa) is shown to be a junior synonym of N. japonicum Niitsuma. Sixteen new species are described; N. sasai sp. n. from Japan in both sexes and all stages, N. verrucum sp. n. from Canada as male and female imagines and tentatively associated larva, N. adunatum sp, n. from Australia as male image based on a mature pupa, N. fuscina sp. n.,N. duminola sp, n., N. insolitum sp. n., N. flabellatum sp. n., and N. ankasense sp. n. from Ghana, N. burmeisteri sp. n. from Ghana and D. R. Congo, N, mergae sp. n. from Thailand, N. infissum sp. n. from Australia. N. acre sp. n. from China, N. latocaudatum sp. n. from Zimbabwe, N, anderseni sp. n. from Tanzania, N harrisoni sp. n. from South Africa, and N. kakumense sp. n. from Ghana as male imagines. N. japonicum Niitsuma and N. brayi (Goetghebuer) are described or redescribed in both sexes and all stages. N. bicorne (Townes) as male imagines, pupae and larvae, N, pictipenne Kieffer as male and female imagines; N. babiyi (Rempel) and N. mirabile (Townes) as male imagines and tentatively associated larvae; N hibaratertium Sasa, N. nojirimaculatum Sasa and N. hibaraquartum Sasa as male imagines. An un- associated pupa from Australia is described.Keys to male imagines, known female imagines, known pupae and larvae of Nilothauma are given and the phylogenetic relationships of the Nilothauma group of genera (Nilothauma,Neelamia Soponis, 1986, and Paranilothauma Soponis, 1986) as well as species of Nilothauma discussed. The genus Paratendipes Kieffer apparently forms the sister group of a group consisting of the genera Paranilothauma, Neelamia and Nilothauma. Within Nilothauma, 4 species groups are recognised with the duminola group forming the sister group of the remaining groups. The babiyi group apparently forms the: sister group of the brayi and the pictipenne groups combined.Paratendipes is cosmopolitan. The Neotropical group of genera (Neelamia and Paranilothauma), probably together with some basal species of Nilothauma, appear to have split off very early with the fragmentation of Pangaea. The species of Nilothauma treated here are of Megagaeic lineages and are confined to the Holarctic, Sino-Indian, Afrotropical and Australian zoogeographical regions for freshwater fauna. The duminola group is made up of 2 Afrotropical species. The sister species A;. duminola and N. fuscina are exclusively Afrotropical and from the same locality in Ghana. Thr babiyi group is made up of 2 Nearctic species which, however, probably originated in the original Gondwanian part of North America, The brayi group may be divisible in 2 groups. One group includes the Afrotropical N burmeisteri and N. ankasense, the East Asian N. japonicum and N. mergae and the Nearctic N bicorne, while in the other group two Australian species (N. adunatum and N. infissum form the sister group of one European (N. brayi), 2 East Asian (N. sasai and N. acre), one East Asian and probably European (N. hibaratertium), and one Nearctic species (N. mirabile). The pictipenne group is made up of 2 species (N. nojirimaculatum Sasa and N. hibaraquartum Sasa) from the Sino-Indian region and 7 species (N. insolitum. N. harrisoni, N. anderseni, N. latocaudatum, N pictipenne, N. flabellatum and N. kakumense) from the Afrotropical Region. The phyletic interrelationship of the Nilothauma group of genera combined with the corresponding area cladogram, BPA analysis and estimations of ancestral areas suggests the early splitting of their common ancestor into a Neotropical group (Neelamia, Paranilothauma and perhaps the babiyi group) and a Megagaeic lineage. The Megagaeic lineage group made up of most Nilothauma species shows a warm/ eurythermic vicariant Gondwanan pattern with multiple sister group relationships between the East Asia subregion and the Afrotropical region. The linkage with the Australian region could be due to the same pattern or, more likely, to recent dispersals from Asia, i.e. post-Miocene contacts. The East Asia - North America linkage likely is of post-Miocene origin. The European species. N brayi and N. ? hibaratertium, most likely is a result of dispersal from East Asia. The distributions and ecologies of the different species of the genus are outlined.

Abstract: Forty specimens of fleas from the Cameroun ("Reserve de Faune du Dja") are studied. They belong to 4 species : 3 are mentioned for the first time in this country, and another is described as new. A brief catalogue is added; at the present time, the Flea fauna of Cameroun is poor (19 species) but some faunistic affinities with eastern Congo-Kinshasa are outlined in this study.

Abstract: A previous study on the population dynamics of the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti (Matile-Ferrero), on cassava has shown that populations increase during the dry season. The aim of the present studies was to determine whether these important changes in the pest population observed throughout the seasons in the field in the Congo, could be correlated with seasonal variations in the level of secondary compounds in the phloem, implicated in cassava plant resistance to P. manihoti. Our results showed that cassava was in drought stress conditions during the dry season (foliar area decreased). The combination of infestation and dry stress factors was clearly visible during the dry season. In fact, the decrease in leaf water potential together with infestation by P. manihoti was clearly observed at the end of the rainy season and during the dry season. The levels of the secondary compounds, rutin (an unfavourable substance to P. manihoti) decreased in the less resistant genotype, and cyanide (a phagostimulant substance) increased in each genotype in the dry season. These results may partially explain the important population changes in P. manihoti during the seasons

Abstract: Active and inactive mariner elements from natural and laboratory populations of Drosophila simulans were isolated and sequenced in order to assess their nucleotide variability and to compare them with previously isolated mariner elements from the sibling species Drosophila mauritiana and Drosophila sechellia. The active elements of D. simulans are very similar among themselves (average 99.7% nucleotide identity), suggesting that the level of mariner expression in different natural populations is largely determined by position effects, dosage effects and perhaps other factors. Furthermore, the D. simulans elements exhibit nucleotide identities of 98% or greater when compared with mariner elements from the sibling species. Parsimony analysis of mariner elements places active elements from the three species into separate groups and suggests that D. simulans is the species from which mariner elements in D. mauritiana and D. sechellia are most likely derived. This result strongly suggests that the ancestral form of mariner among these species was an active element. The two inactive mariner elements sequenced from D. simulans are very similar to the inactive peach element from D. mauritiana. The similarity may result from introgression between D. simulans and D. mauritiana or from selective constraints imposed by regulatory effects of inactive elements

Abstract: The genetic basis of three morphological traits (ovariole number, sternopleural bristle number and wing length) of Drosophila melanogaster has been investigated in natural populations that show great differences in these traits, i.e. Bordeaux (France) and Loua (Congo). F1 and F2 crosses, and chromosome substitutions between these two populations, were analysed. Maternal and/or X chromosome effects were found for sternopleural bristle number and wing length. For all traits, significant effects from each of' the three chromosomes were found, but in general only one or two chromosomes had a major effect. Moreover, in all cases significant interactions between chromosomes were observed, suggesting the existence of epistatic effects. Our results are discussed and compared to those obtained from the analysis of selected laboratory strains

Abstract: The sequences of the 5' long-terminal repeat (LTR) and adjacent leader regions of 27 full-length copia elements isolated from natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster, D. simulans, and D. mauritiana are presented. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that although D. melanogaster copia elements are distinct from those of D. simulans and D. mauritiana, the elements of these latter two species are not distinguishable from one another. LTRs and adjacent 5' leader regions of elements isolated from D. simulans and D. mauritiana are structurally similar to one another and carry substantial deletional variation mapping to regions previously identified as being of potential importance for copia expression

Abstract: The plasticity of ovariole number relative to developmental temperature was studied in three populations of Drosophila melanogaster at both ends of the cline: a temperate French population and two equatorial Congolese. Ovary size was much greater in the French flies, in agreement with an already known latitudinal cline. Among isofemale lines, significant differences in genetic variability were observed between populations with a maximum variability at intermediate temperatures. Parameters of phenotypic variability (CV and FA) were not statistically different among lines or populations, but a significant increase at low temperature was demonstrated for both. The shapes of the response curves (i.e., the norm of reaction) were analyzed by adjusting the data to a quadratic equation. The parameters of the equation were highly variable among lines. On the other hand, the temperature for maximum value of ovarioles (TMV) was much less variable and exhibited only a slightly significant difference between temperate and tropical flies (22.2 degree C vs. 22.7 degree C). During its geographic extension toward colder places, D. melanogaster underwent a large, presumably adaptative, increase in ovariole number but very little change in the norm of reaction of that trait
